What is the Lumad culture and how important is it to you? (Ano ba ang kultura ng mga Lumad at gaano ito kahalaga sa inyo?)
LUMAD VOLUNTEER
“Pagsasaka ang kultura at buhay ng mga Lumad na konektado at nakaangkla sa lupa.”
INTERVIEWER
Does having education, a livelihood, a safe and secure life, and freedom also important to you? How are all of these important? (Gaano po ba kahalaga sa inyong komunidad ang pagkakaroon ng edukasyon, hanapbuhay, ligtas na pamumuhay, at kalayaan?)
LUMAD VOLUNTEER
“Sa mahabang panahon, hindi naabtan ng edukasyon ang Lumad na komunidad, Madali lamang [silang] maloko ng mga malalaking minahan pagkat hindi marunong magbasa at magsulat. Ngunit nang nagkaroon ng mga paaralang Lumad, nahatiran ng edukasyon ang mga Lumad na komunidad at naging ekspresyon laban sa pandarambong sa lupang ninuno.”

Is there anything else you would like to say about your situation? (May gusto pa po ba kayong sabihin ukol sa inyong sitwasyon?)

“Respect IP rights.”

As of January 2020, 2,191 Lumad individuals from the Davao Region, Misamis Oriental, Agusan del Norte, and Bukidnon have been displaced since 2017 and 2018.
As of February 2021, at least 178 out of 216 Lumad schools were forcibly closed depriving 5,500 students of their education.
Along with this, 617 cases of attacks on Lumad schools have been reported including extrajudicial killings, sexual harassment, illegal arrests, forced surrenders, harrassment and intimidation, and aerial bombings.
